Press release 18th April 2019 Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education offers concentration in Special Education Needs, and concertation in Infant & Toddler, a first for local bachelor’s degree programmes Online version: http://www.public.seedland.hk/press/YCCECE/1904-Concentration/
After the implementation of the Free Quality Kindergarten Education Policy in 2017/18, the Government is now formulating plans which imposes an “all-graduate KG-teaching force” in the long run, meaning there is a growing demand for well-trained ECE professionals. As pioneer and leader in early childhood education (ECE), Yew Chung Education Foundation (YCEF) has established the Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE), Asia’s first specialist institute in ECE. The College is currently offering bachelor’s degree programmes in ECE disciplines, dedicated to nurturing a new generation of passionate and inspired ECE professionals for Hong Kong. Limited service support for students with special education needs (SEN) has been a rising concern in Hong Kong. Responding to the matter, as many as 4,000 jobs will be created under the Government’s “Onsite Pre-school Rehabilitation Services” scheme by October 2019, calling for more ECE graduates with SEN worker qualification to render support services to parents. On the other hand, quality ECE and care services for children aged 0 to 3, as confirmed by extensive research, are pivotal to the holistic development of young children. In recognition of its importance, the Government has established the Commission on Children in June 2018, aiming to develop policies and set strategies related to development and advancement of children. Furthermore, the Government has promised additional funding in the 2019-20 Budget to improve the manning ratio of qualified child care workers in child care centres. The Labour and Welfare Bureau has proposed to enhance the manning ratio from 1:8 to 1:6 for children aged 0 to under 2, and from 1:14 to 1:11 for children aged 2 to under 3 within the 2019-2020 school year. These changes in child care services signify the Government’s commitment on improving children’s advancement and well-being, as well as additional market demand for well-trained ECE workers. Staying on the pulse of the ECE industry, YCCECE provides professional Bachelor Degree programme that meet the latest trends and needs of our society. The College is now offering concentration in Special Education Needs, equipping students with the professional knowledge and skills required. This includes helping SEN students to learn and cope with daily challenges with assistive technologies and various methods of communication. Other than the SEN concentration, the College is also offering Infant & Toddler Education (InTod), which is the first local bachelor programme concentration focusing on this specific study area. This will strengthen students’ skills and knowledge in their opted area of specialism and equip them with competitive advantage for employment when they graduate. Students can opt for SEN or InTod concentration in Year 3. The College has set up scholarships, up to amount of full tuition, to encourage enrolment in these two specific areas.
The programme aims to nurture world-class early childhood educators who are knowledgeable in contemporary and international ECE theories and practice, in an immersive English learning environment. Students will undergo 16 weeks of practicum experience, where students will gain hands-on experience across all ECE settings through their placements in International and local kindergartens as well as Special Education Needs (SEN) settings for a total of 8 weeks then yet another 8 weeks of “Advanced practicum” in Year 3. The BEdECE programme is a multi-entry programme, providing great flexibility to students and supporting lifelong learning. Applicants who hold a ECE related higher diploma or higher qualification are eligible to apply for Year 3 entry, either under the two-year full-time scheme or the four-year part-time scheme. Upon graduation, the degree fully prepares them for gaining qualifications of being a registered kindergarten teacher, child care worker, child care supervisor, and special child care worker. Graduates are eligible to apply for postgraduate study programmes, as well as the Certification Course for Kindergarten Principals, further paving their way in their ECE career. The College will be holding Information Seminar on Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Early Childhood Education, titled “Be a specialist in Infant & Toddler Education / Special Education Needs”, at 2:30pm on 27th April. Speakers will share with the audience on the latest ECE market trend, how to become an ECE expert, as well as programme and scholarship introduction. All interested parties are welcome. For details:
